Satin mini dress saved my courthouse elopement
My original wedding dress got lost in the mail. Like, actually lost. I tracked it every hour for three days and it just sat in some sorting facility in Ohio. I was supposed to get married at this old courthouse downtown in like four days and I had nothing. I remember sitting on my kitchen floor at 1am scrolling through Amazon and ASOS and everywhere else, just throwing stuff in my cart hoping something would stick.

I ended up ordering this little white strapless satin mini from some random brand I'd never heard of. Honestly I didn't even care at that point, I just needed something that wouldn't make me look like a bridesmaid. When it showed up I literally ripped the package open in the hallway of my apartment building – my neighbor probably thought I was crazy.

I tried it on and it actually fit okay, but the back laces were way too short. Like, I could barely tie them without feeling like the seams were gonna pop. I'm curvy, wider hips, you know, and that ribbon they sent was a joke.

So I ran to Michael's the afternoon before – yeah, the craft store – and bought a longer satin ribbon. I just looped it through and tied it, super easy fix. My mom helped me sew the ends so it wouldn't fray. Took ten minutes tops. After that it fit like a dream, honestly better than the original dress would've.

The fabric surprised me. It's thick, not that shiny cheap stuff that looks like a costume. It held its shape all day, didn't ride up, and I didn't have to tug at the top during photos. The strapless top has this little silicone strip inside that actually works – I was sweaty (it was warm out, sue me) and it still stayed up. But I will say, I forgot to steam it and there were wrinkles across the skirt that you can totally see in some of our close-up shots. I was too nervous to use an iron on satin so I just let it be. Oh well.

The length hits me just above the knee – I'm 5'6, so it was perfect for walking up those stone steps and not tripping. I wore white satin pointed heels with little rhinestone bows that matched, but my feet were killing me by the end of the night. I should've brought flats but I didn't think of it. Next time I'd just do block heels or even cute white sandals.

For accessories I kept it minimal – just my engagement ring, some tiny diamond studs, and no necklace cause the neckline is simple and clean. I have a buzz cut so no veil or hair flowers, which actually looked really modern against the old courthouse brick walls. I got a ton of compliments from our small group – they couldn't believe I paid under $100 for it. My sister kept asking if I was sure it wasn't from a designer.

The only other thing I'd mention – the A-line skirt is pretty full so when you sit down it puffs up a little. I had to kinda smooth it out during dinner. Also, I ate a lot of pasta and the waist felt a bit snug afterwards but that's my own fault. I did spill a little champagne on it during toasts and it wiped off with a napkin no problem, so that was a relief.

If you're in the same panic I was – lost dress, rushed timeline, small courthouse thing – just get something like this. Skip the big ballgowns, they're too heavy for a casual ceremony anyway. Just make sure you check the back laces and buy extra ribbon ahead of time so you're not running to Michael's the day before like I did. Also steam it. Don't forget to steam it. I keep forgetting that part.

Would I buy it again? Yeah, probably. It saved my wedding day and I actually looked like myself – not some stiff version of a bride. My original dress getting lost was a blessing in disguise honestly. This one felt more me.
Hope that helps someone out there. I've already worn it again to a fancy dinner date, so at least I got my money's worth. Now I just need to figure out what to do with that lost dress if it ever shows up.
