I Wore This Black Tie Wedding Guest Dress to an Estate Wedding

The save-the-date went up on our fridge in January and I did what I always do. I said “how fun,” told my husband we’d figure out the outfit situation, and then forgot about it for two months.

Then the actual invitation came. Black tie. At an estate in South Carolina. April.

Black tie. I read it twice. The nicest thing in my closet is a sweater that hasn’t started pilling yet.

I went down the usual rabbit hole. I scrolled through black tie wedding guest outfit ideas until my phone wanted to die, ordered four dresses, sent three back, and basically resigned myself to wearing something uncomfortable and feeling vaguely disappointed about it. That’s kind of my wedding-guest track record.

Then the black tie wedding guest dress I almost didn’t open showed up, and I’m telling you about it because roughly nine strangers stopped me at that wedding to ask where it was from.

What it actually looks like on

It’s a black gown, floor-length, with this leaf pattern done in tiny sequins all over the fabric. Not the kind of sequin that looks like a disco ball had an accident — more like dark embroidery that only really catches when you move. The neckline is a V, deep enough to feel like you made an effort, not so deep that you’re tugging it up all night. Sleeveless, with fairly wide straps.

The bottom is where it gets me. It’s fitted through the hips and then flares into this tulle mermaid situation, and there’s a lot happening in the fabric — the leaves keep going down, layered over the netting, and it has real movement when you walk. I’m not usually a “twirl for the photo” person. I did it twice.

Getting ready in the hotel room

I did my own makeup while my husband wandered around looking for the iron. Nothing crazy. I went a little heavier on the eyes than I would for a normal day — a bronze smoky situation, lots of mascara — and I kept the lip soft so I wasn’t reapplying after every cocktail. A little cream blush, a little bronzer, and suddenly I looked like a person who gets invited to nice things. That’s the whole goal.

My hair I pulled up and off my face, with a couple of pieces left loose around the front. I own these big long black beaded earrings that I basically never get to wear, and this was finally their moment. They’re dramatic against the black dress and they made the whole thing feel intentional without me having to pile on other jewelry. Small studs would’ve been fine, but the long ones were the call.

Shoes: black open-toe heels, chosen for one reason. I could actually walk in them.

The wedding itself

The estate was stupid pretty. We walked up through tall trees with lights wrapped around the trunks, and the ceremony was on a wooden deck looking out over the garden. Azaleas were blooming, the light was that low gold April light, and there was a pergola covered in greenery. My husband cleaned up in his tux, I’ll give him that. He even kept the bow tie on the whole night, which is a documented miracle.

The dress held up to everything. I sat through a long dinner, I danced to songs I didn’t know, and the tulle flared out without getting tangled or stepped on the way I feared. I got compliments all night. From people I knew, from people I didn’t, and from one very sweet older woman who grabbed my arm and just said “that dress.”

The honest part

Okay, it wasn’t perfect. The straps could have been taken in a little. They weren’t slipping, exactly, but they sat a touch loose on my shoulders and I could feel it. A tailor would’ve fixed it for probably twenty bucks, but I didn’t want to spend the money or add another errand to my week. And genuinely, nobody noticed. My husband didn’t notice. I noticed, because I was the one wearing it, and that’s about it.

The other thing worth saying: I didn’t get it hemmed. I’m 5’6” and the length was exactly right with my heels straight out of the bag. I braced myself for an alterations bill and it never came. For a floor length black wedding guest dress, that alone made it worth it.

The part I didn’t expect

I think I’m most surprised by how little I thought about the dress once the night started. A good gown is the kind you forget you’re wearing, and I forgot. I ate, I danced, I sat on the porch with the people I love and didn’t once tug at the neckline or wish I could change into flats.

So if you’ve got a formal or black tie wedding on the calendar and you’re staring at the invitation the way I did — or spending your weeknights scrolling long formal wedding guest dresses online — something like this, dark and fitted on top with a little drama in the skirt, is the answer. I’d buy it again. I’d wear it again. I might even hunt for another excuse, since the earrings are out now and they can’t go back in the box.
